Online payments

Clients pay the invoice from the link. The money lands in your account.

Your client opens the invoice and pays it by card or straight from their bank account. The payment is made on your own Stripe account and paid out to your bank. Cheques and e-Transfers still come in, so those are recorded in a few seconds too.

On every plan

Your own Stripe account

The owner sets up online payments from Settings. Ridgepole opens a Stripe account in your company's name, with the full Stripe dashboard, and Stripe asks you for what it needs to verify you.

Each payment is made on your Stripe account, and Stripe pays it out to your bank. Ridgepole does not hold your clients' money and does not add a fee of its own to their payments.

  • Only the owner can connect or disconnect the account. Where clients' money goes is not an admin's decision.
  • Admins and project managers can see whether it is connected and what Stripe is still asking for, in plain words.

Card, or straight from a bank account

Clients can pay by card. On an invoice in Canadian dollars, once Stripe has switched on bank debits for your account, they can also pay from their bank account by Canadian pre-authorized debit. Stripe presents the debit agreement and keeps the record of it, and the client says whether it is a personal or a business account, which decides the rules that protect them.

A bank debit takes 3 to 5 business days to clear. While it does, both of you see it as on its way. The pay page will not ask for that money again, and the invoice is not flagged overdue for it.

The client pays the remaining balance in one payment, up to $999,999.99, which is Stripe's limit for a single charge. Stripe emails a receipt to the client's address on file.

What it costs

Stripe's fees come out of each payment, from your Stripe balance, as with any Stripe account. The fee recorded on each payment in Ridgepole is the one Stripe actually took. Ridgepole's own price is your monthly plan, and online payments are on every plan.

Cheques and e-Transfers

Most clients still pay some invoices by hand. Record a cheque, e-Transfer, wire or cash against the invoice with the date it came in and a reference number, and attach a photo of the cheque or a screenshot of the e-Transfer. If the same reference has already been recorded on the job, Ridgepole asks before recording it twice.

A post-dated cheque is recorded on the day it is deposited, not before. A cheque that bounces is reversed with a reason: the invoice owes the money again, and the history still shows the cheque that came back. You can print a receipt for any payment.

Write how clients pay you in Settings, your e-Transfer address or who to make cheques out to, and it prints on every invoice and shows on the pay page.

Money that does not match an invoice

A deposit that arrives before its invoice is recorded on the job on account, and applied to the invoice later. An online payment for an invoice you voided while the client was paying is kept on the job, unapplied, for you to apply to the replacement or refund. It is never dropped.

Refund from your Stripe dashboard and Ridgepole picks it up: the invoice's paid amount comes back down by what was refunded, part or whole. A disputed card payment or a bounced bank debit is emailed to the people who chase money, not just shown in the app.

On Enterprise with QuickBooks Online connected, each payment is entered against the invoice it paid. Card and bank debit payments land in Undeposited Funds with Stripe's fee noted, so your bookkeeper groups each Stripe payout into one deposit that matches the bank.

Built for how it works in Canada

Pre-authorized debit, not US ACH

A Canadian client paying from a Canadian bank account pays by pre-authorized debit, under Payments Canada's rules. US ACH only debits US accounts in US dollars, which is no use to a homeowner in Brandon.

Cheques and e-Transfers are normal here

Plenty of Canadian clients will always pay by cheque or Interac e-Transfer. Those are recorded with a photo in seconds, and a job set to paper never prints a pay link at all.

Canadian dollars

Bank debits are offered on invoices in Canadian dollars. Card payments are charged in the invoice's currency.

Questions builders ask

Does Ridgepole hold my clients' money?

No. Payments are made on your own Stripe account and Stripe pays them out to your bank. Ridgepole records what happened so your invoices and your Stripe account agree.

What are the fees?

Stripe's, taken from each payment. When we checked Stripe's published Canadian pricing in October 2026 it was 2.9 percent plus 30 cents for a card, and 1 percent plus 40 cents, capped at $5, for a pre-authorized debit. Check stripe.com/en-ca/pricing for the current rates. Ridgepole adds nothing on top.

What if the client pays part by cheque?

Record the cheque or e-Transfer against the invoice, and the pay link asks for exactly what is left.

How do refunds work?

Refund from your Stripe dashboard. Ridgepole picks up the refund from Stripe and brings the invoice's paid amount back down to match, part or whole.

Which plan includes online payments?

Every plan. You need a Stripe account in your company's name, which the owner sets up from Settings.
