Permits and inspections

No lapsed permits, and no failed inspection that gets forgotten.

Working on an expired permit is a stop-work order. A failed rough-in holds up drywall. Both are dates someone has to remember, so Ridgepole remembers them for you.

Permits on the job

Record each permit with its type, number, the authority that issued it, the date issued and the date it expires, its status and your notes.

  • Building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical
  • Demolition, grading, fire, zoning, other
  • Pending, issued, active, expired or closed

Warned before a permit lapses

The project managers on the job get an in-app alert and an email 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before a live permit expires, and on the day it does. Once at each mark, not every morning, so the warning is still read on day 3.

Inspections, from footing to final

Schedule an inspection against the permit it belongs to, with the inspector’s name and the date. Record the result when it comes in: pass, fail, or conditional pass, with the inspector’s notes and the corrective action.

  • Foundation, framing, insulation, drywall
  • Rough electrical, rough plumbing, rough mechanical
  • Final electrical, final plumbing, final mechanical, final

A failed inspection opens an item

Record a fail and Ridgepole opens a high-priority item on the job’s RFI list in the same step, carrying the inspector’s notes and the corrective action required. The fix is on a list with a number until somebody closes it, instead of in somebody’s head.

Keep the permit itself and the inspection certificate in the job’s Documents, in a Permits folder.

Built for how it works in Canada

More than one authority

The municipality is not always the inspector. In Ontario, electrical goes through ESA and gas through TSSA, on separate permits taken by the trade. Each permit records its own issuing authority, so they are not lumped together as one.

Inspections are hard gates

A failed rough-in stops the next trade. Ridgepole keeps the fail and its corrective action open, numbered and high priority until someone deals with it.

Questions builders ask

What do I record for an inspection?

The permit it belongs to, its type, the inspector and the date. When the result comes in, record pass, fail or conditional pass with the inspector’s notes and the corrective action.

Who gets the permit expiry warnings?

The project managers on that job, in the app and by email.

What happens when an inspection fails?

Recording a fail opens a high-priority item on the job’s RFI list with the inspector’s notes and the corrective action, so it is tracked until it is closed.

Where does the permit itself go?

In the job’s Documents, in a Permits folder, with every version kept and a share link you can send the inspector that expires on its own.
